As a tourist, you might tick off the sights and take the perfect photos…

For me, it was trying homemade Raki in the heart of Berat. The first sip, a wild burst of blueberry and strong spirit (a bit much for my G&T-loving taste buds 😅). But then came the Roma with cinnamon, smooth, warm, and surprisingly comforting.

Moments like these remind me, travelling isn’t just about seeing places, it’s about feeling them.

This town feels like frozen in time..

This little coastal town in Montenegro completely stole the show, just the sound of the sea, church bells echoing, and boats gliding across the bay. 🌊⛪

We spent the afternoon wandering its quiet stone streets and watching the sunlight dance on the water, and it honestly felt like time slowed down. There’s something about 📍Perast — small, simple, and so breathtaking — that makes you want to stay just a little longer.

We had pizza by the bay and tasted unique Pomogrenate desert wine and handmade milk ice cream which was really really smooth and milky.

Highly recommended place when you are in Montenegro or Albania or Balkans

A few months ago, a simple thought crossed our minds

“Let’s slow down, take a break, travel, explore, and challenge ourselves”

But turning that thought into reality wasn’t easy, especially in our late 30s, walking away from well paying jobs and choosing an unconventional path of giving it all up to travel.

There was a lot of planning involved:

🔑 Figuring out logistics, where to store our stuff, what to do with our car, sorting out the right insurance cover, making sure our home numbers stayed connected for banking, and getting international SIMs so we could stay in touch.

💰 Financial scenarios, making sure we had a safety net, covering fixed expenses back home in Australia while traveling, building robust budgets, knowing our spending threshold, and setting a realistic point for when we’d need to return.

💬 Discussions (and plenty of arguments 😅) about destinations, travel styles, and how we wanted this journey to look and feel.

And then came the hardest part, packing up our home and convincing our families what this decision really meant for us.

Now, here we are… living this big leap of faith...

What you get on EBC Trek in February
Fewer Crowds: Enjoy quieter trails and more personal cultural experiences. Yes we spent hours talking to caretakers and their lives in the region

Clear Weather: Crisp skies offer stunning mountain views. Although during evening it will get cloudy but that’s the good sign for your trek the next day.

Affordable Rates: Lower costs for flights, accommodations, and guides. Trust your guide he knows the best.

Winter Adventure: A challenging but rewarding experience.

Be prepared for EBC Trek in February
Extreme Cold: Temperatures can drop below -20°C (-4°F). Yes it is true but with proper layering you can manage that. Hot tip - do not attempt this in winter without @nalgene bottles

Snowfall Risks: Snow and ice can make trails slippery or block paths. We didnt witness this heavily but manageable. Again listen to your guide and you will be fine.

Shorter Days: Limited daylight requires careful planning but that’s the offset for having the trek to yourself.
Limited Services: Some teahouses may be closed or have basic facilities. But whichever ones are open they will look after you very well.

Altitude Challenges: Cold weather adds to the difficulty of acclimatization. Have at least 4-5L of water or ginger lemon honey tea, have medicine as backup, rest well and take proper acclimatisation days.

February offers solitude and clear views but requires preparation for cold weather and no crowds.

Looking to experience raw beauty of NZ’s Southern Alps, this is the one you don’t want to miss.

📍Hooker Valley Track - South Island

1. Distance: 10 km (6.2 miles) round trip, taking 3-4 hours to complete.
2. Difficulty: Easy to moderate, with uneven terrain and some steep sections.
3. Scenery: Stunning views of Mount Cook, glaciers, and alpine lakes.
4. Weather: Rapidly changing weather, with winds and rain common.
5. Access: Open year-round, but winter conditions can make it tougher.

We did this trek in summers and we witnessed clear sky while reaching the top but rains while returning from trek. So be prepared and check local weather.

1. Trek in Shoulder Seasons: Go in late February-March or November-December for fewer crowds. We did it in early Feb.
2. Start Early Daily: Hit the trail early to avoid the rush and enjoy quieter mornings. Couple of days don’t hesitate to start when it’s still dark.
3. Take Alternative Routes: Try routes like Gokyo Lakes for fewer trekkers and unique scenery. We couldn’t do this but still in February there were hardly any people on the main trek.
4. Stay in Smaller Villages: Skip popular stops; choose lesser-known villages to avoid crowds. We actually changed our tea houses couple of times during the trek when we didn’t like what we saw.
5. Avoid Group Tours: Trek independently or in a small group to keep flexibility and avoid peak crowd timings. We went just three of us with reliable guide and sherpas and it was super fun.

One of our best vacations road trip to South Island
Here is brief itinerary we followed:

1. Christchurch: Kicked off our journey in Christchurch, picked up our car from airport @sixt and went to explore its street art and serene botanic gardens.
2. Lake Tekapo: Stopped by Lake Tekapo for stunning turquoise views and stargazing by the Church of the Good Shepherd.
3. Hooker Valley Trek: Hiked Hooker Valley with epic views of Mount Cook, glaciers, and suspension bridges.
4. Omarama Clay Cliffs: Glad that we discovered Omarama’s otherworldly Clay Cliffs—such a unique photo spot! And such a change of scenery
5. Queenstown: Thrived in Queenstown’s energy, from adventure sports to lakeside views.
6. Milford Sound: Cruised through Milford Sound’s fjords, with towering cliffs and epic waterfalls.
7. Fox Glacier: Hiked Fox Glacier, surrounded by stunning ice formations and blue caves.
8. Hokitika: Ended in Hokitika, enjoying sunsets and exploring the famous driftwood beach.

There is a dress code, 9-50 opening hours, closed on Monday, and a lot of parking space.

Located in Wollongong is a must visit when you are around to find peace and serenity.

Seven Spice in Lane Cove offers an intriguing fusion menu. The creative combinations sound appealing but sometimes result in underwhelming not thoughtfully on compromised taste.

What we tried:
